Fashion Branding and Communication University of the Creative Arts

I'm a fashion branding and communications student who loves any form of creative media, especially marketing and content creation. My experience on the program gave me the opportunity to work in Tokyo, gain real experience, make connections and friends for life, and step outside my comfort zone.

Zoya is a former student and verified Absolute Internship ambassador

Why Zoya chose this path

I wanted to gain a perspective i wouldn’t have been able to get from an internship at home, I chose to intern abroad because I wanted to challenge myself and immerse myself in a new culture.

How I got in

Japan has been a dream destination for me since I can remember so it felt like the natural choice for me, especially because of the fashion, culture and creativity all around.

Top tips for getting accepted

my top tips would be: - don’t be afraid to ask questions - make an effort with your coworkers - keep an open mind and say yes to new adventures

Common mistakes to avoid

If I could’ve gone back and done it differently, I'd definitely have explored Tokyo and surrounding areas more and not repeated certain places as much as I did!

What Zoya wishes they knew

Things I wish I knew before starting

I wish i knew it was normal to feel nervous and out of place for the first week or so, as it’s such a different environment to what I was used to.

The hardest part

I think the hardest part was the homesickness and how overwhelming everything was for a little bit, but it was all worth it in the end!

The best decision I made

The best decision I made was taking weekend trips with my friends and with Absolute! The views and places we got to visit were beautiful and I will never forget them.

What it's actually like

A typical day

Depending if I was working from home or not (only went to the office 2x a week) I would wake up and prepare for my commute to the office, once I got to work, I would work on different tasks such as market research, logo design & developing ideas for the brand. We would usually have lunch as a group which was great as I got to know everyone well, then spend the afternoon continuing with projects and receiving feedback on my work. After work I would spend the evenings exploring Tokyo with my friends and trying new places to eat which was always fun so everyday felt balanced between work and socialising!

Questions students ask Zoya

How did you manage to balance your work and social life?
As my company was extremely understanding and supportive, they often allowed me to make my own schedule for work tasks and how I'd like to allocate my work they gave me, so each week I would create a calendar and finish each project within a working day so I had nothing overdue and could enjoy my evenings freely. I didn’t procrastinate or avoid tasks!
How did you land your internship - what did the application process involve?
My application involved a couple interviews, one with Absolute which was the first impression so they could understand my skills and what I was looking for out of the program. The second was with a program manager for the Tokyo program which involved us getting to know each other, and for her to explain the whole process before we moved on to the next stage, which was an interview with the company they found most suitable for me.
What skills do you wish you had before starting that you'd tell others to prepare?
Definitely more advanced tech skills such as coding, although I'm very much proficient in adobe programs and canva I definitely will be looking into coding for website development as it would’ve been super useful for both myself and my company at the time! But all depends on your industry.
