How I got in

I reviewed Absolute Internship's programs and identified cities with strong finance industries. After selecting the top 3 programs for me, I made a pros and cons list for each list and decided that Madrid was the best option for me!

Top tips for getting accepted

Try to push yourself outside of your comfort zone prior to the start of your program. For example, go to a new place in your town and try to strike up a conversation with someone you do not know. This will make you comfortable with meeting new people and encourage you to be in new and possibly uncomfortable situations.

Common mistakes to avoid

If I had to go back and do anything differently, I would have spent more time learning the language pertaining to my program location.

Things I wish I knew before starting

Your entire pace of life changes when you go to a new place. You should embrace these changes and find new places, people, and things to do during your time abroad. This will make your time more memorable and help you find a sense of belonging in your new setting.

The hardest part

Honestly, the hardest part about interning abroad is being comfortable with being uncomfortable. There are going to be situations you do not feel comfortable in and people you may have never met before, but embracing this part of your trip and trying to learn from these challenging moments is where you will find the most growth.

The best decision I made

The best decision I made during my time abroad was to make new memories and push myself outside of my comfort zone.

What it's actually like

A typical day

A typical day in Madrid would start with me waking up around 7:00 AM to shower and get ready for the day. After getting ready and commuting to work, I would start work at 9:00 AM. I would then work in the office from 9:00 AM to 1:30 PM, when I would take a break to go get lunch. After returning from lunch around 2:15 PM, I would then work until around 4:00 PM and then commute home to make evening plans with my new friends!

What is your favorite thing you did while interning abroad?
Travel! Traveling was one of my favorite things to do while being abroad. Especially after choosing to intern in Spain, where it is so easy to access the rest of Europe.
How did you land your internship - what did the application process involve?
I landed my internship by prepping and researching my company very thoroughly. By doing rigorous prep work, I was able to easily succeed in the interview and land my internship in Madrid.
What skills do you wish you had before starting that you'd tell others to prepare?
I wish I had been more culturally adaptable before starting my program. This would have provided a smoother transition.
