Why Angelika chose this path
“I wanted to gain professional experience on an international level and experience a completely different culture. I hoped the experience would help me develop skills and international experience that I can use in my future career in international events.”
How I got in
I decided on Shanghai because I wanted to experience somewhere completely different from places I had travelled to before. I was really interested in Shanghai because of how modern and high-tech the city is, and I wanted to experience that for myself as well as learn more about Chinese culture.
Top tips for getting accepted
Just do it, even if you’re scared! It’s a once in a lifetime opportunity. Be open-minded, try new things and make the most of your time there because it goes by so quickly.
Common mistakes to avoid
If I could have done anything differently, I would have stayed longer! The experience went by so quickly, and by the time I felt completely settled into life in Shanghai, it was almost time to leave. I would have loved more time to explore the city, experience the culture and continue developing professionally.

Things I wish I knew before starting
I honestly felt really well prepared before starting. Absolute provided all the information and support I needed before travelling, so I knew what to expect and felt prepared for the experience.
The hardest part
The hardest part was probably communication at times because of the language barrier. There were situations where English wasn't widely spoken, so I had to find different ways to communicate and adapt. It could be challenging sometimes, but it was also a valuable part of the experience.
The best decision I made
The best decision I’ve made was saying yes to the opportunity to intern in Shanghai. It pushed me outside my comfort zone, gave me international work experience and allowed me to experience a completely different culture. I came back with more confidence, new experiences and an even stronger interest in building an international career.
What it's actually like
A typical day
A typical day would start with the gym, which was conveniently only two floors down from my room! After a shower, I’d head to work, usually grabbing a coffee on the way. I worked from around 9:30am until 12:30pm, followed by a lunch break until 2pm, and then continued working in the afternoon. After work, I’d head back to the hotel and usually meet up with friends, explore somewhere new or just relax after the day.
