Why Jenny chose this path

“I wanted to expand my knowledge and understanding in a field I hadn’t had the chance to whilst gaining an international perspective! I also really wanted the opportunity to experience a new culture both professionally and personally and meet like minded people from around the world. I really got to immerse myself into the unique Spanish Catalonian culture of Barcelona and it was an amazing experience. ”

How I got in

I really liked the Spanish culture and approach to work and everyday life, I also really enjoy cities. I also wanted somewhere I could enjoy during the day and the night time. Barcelona is a huge city with beautiful beaches and buildings, and there is always something to do! Barcelona is also often referred to as Europe’s business innovation hub so it really ticked a lot of boxes for me!

Top tips for getting accepted

Explore your location and be as proactive as possible! It’s normal to feel a little nervous at first but definitely chat to the other interns in your accommodation or programme! Finding new cafes and restaurants, and even just going for walks with other interns led to some amazing memories and I’m still friends with people from my programme too!

Common mistakes to avoid

I probably would have explored a little more outside of the city! We visited Badalona which was lovely and I would definitely recommend, but looking back planning some trips even further would have been fab! We wanted to visit Costa brava but had some issues with booking transport, but Barcelona itself is so big we always had something to do in the city or somewhere new to see as well!

It didn’t make a difference really but I didn’t realise just how big Barcelona was!

The hardest part

I wouldn’t say anything was particularly hard so much as new! It was a little difficult to properly put myself out there and speak to the other interns in the beginning but I felt I settled quite quickly as everyone is so welcoming! Navigating the metro seemed a little daunting at first but it was easy enough once we got used to it (and got on the wrong line a few times!). Adjusting to a new culture and routine was definitely different and new but the experience was 100% worth it.

The best decision I made

Choosing to actually apply and go for it! I hadn’t been abroad alone before so I was really quite nervous, but it worked out even better than I’d expected!

What it's actually like

A typical day

I had a hybrid placement and so a typical day would usually involve getting ready and either heading to a cafe to do my work there or heading to the metro for the commute to the office! My internship placement involved quite a few other people from Absolute so we’d often take the metro together or complete our work in a cafe or the coworking space in our accommodation! The coffee scene in Barcelona is amazing and so I tried so many places. My role involved market research and over-viewing the website, and I even got involved with videography for the company blog! My lunch break was usually spent with other interns trying new places too. After work I’d meet with friends and we’d explore or chat with each other in the communal spaces we had! Dinner in Spain is quite late so we’d head out to the metro in the evening to try new restaurants or cook and eat on the terrace together before walking around the city!

Questions students ask Jenny

What was a highlight of your internship?
Meeting people from around the world and exploring the city together as well as just going shopping, for coffees, and for food with them as we all settled in too! The city is beautiful and I still speak to other interns today too! I also got to experience Sant Joan which was amazing, everyone across the city was celebrating together and the atmosphere was so lively all evening and all night long, especially near the beaches!
How did you land your internship - what did the application process involve?
As I applied through my university I completed an application form with them. This involved answering some questions about why I wanted to intern abroad and why I chose Barcelona as well as a few others! I then interviewed with Absolute to ensure I was a good fit and we spoke about what I wanted from the experience and my goals, I also completed a few forms around this including what sector I was interested in. Absolute then paired me with a company and I interviewed with them! I didn’t feel the company was a match for me personally and I actually changed my sector early in the process to one which would best fit me with the help of the Absolute coordinators! I interviewed with another company and was successful! I found out that evening and was super excited. Absolute got me in touch with my supervisor who made a groupchat with the other interns so we could introduce ourselves and keep in touch throughout the programme!
Did your internship change what you want to do in the future?
In a way yes! My internship really solidified my interest in business development and consultancy and I feel much more prepared for future opportunities. I’m also much more knowledgeable on what the role involves and other sectors/areas which would suit me and that I’d be interested in working in!
